With an Omega3 content typically over 60%, Flax Seed Oil is an ideal supplement for your horses overall health, vitality and wellbeing. Flax Seed Oil is a fantastic source of cool energy that can assist with recovery after exercise and help to prevent tying up. Studies also show that Omega3 supplementation to stallions can promote sperm quality and mortality.
All FourFlax Flax Seed Oil is cold-pressed, using New Zealand grown linseed. It is also guaranteed to be human food grade quality oil.
The recommended feeding rate is between 30-200ml per day depending on the animal and size. Please refer to dosage guidelines before administrating.

FLAX SEED PRODUCTS FOR HORSES
Cold-Pressed to a very high standard from Linseed Seed, Flax Seed Oil is rich in Omega 3, an Essential Fatty Acid that has many health benefits, and produces incredibly shiny coats...The Natural Choice for a Healthy Horse
We recommend that once you have bought Flax Seed Oil for your horse, you keep it in the fridge. This helps to maintain the quality and freshness of the oil. It is also a good idea to place some kitchen towel underneath to catch any drips! If the bottle is too big (such as the 5 Litre, 10 Litre or 20 Litre), then as long as the container is kept in a cool dark place such as a garage or tack shed, the oil will keep just fine. The key is to keep it away from sunlight.
With the Flax Seed Flake, again a cool dark place is important, so a garage or tack shed would be perfect. It is important to keep the flake out of sunlight as this will reduce the quality. The amount to feed depends on the desired results....the flake is high in protein and so should not be over fed. As a general guide we suggest around one cup per day per horse, but it also depends on what else is being fed alongside it, and your specific nutritional requirements.
For our oil, we suggest a daily feeding rate of 30ml-70ml of oil as a starting point. This will help your horse to adjust to the oil, and is a perfect amount for general health and conditioning. You should see results within 10-14 days, as long as the oil is fed every day.
The coat and hair will be softer and shinier and you may notice a difference in mobility and general behaviour. If you have a miniature horse, you should be feeding roughly 30ml per day, a pony should be fed around 40ml per day, upwards to a horse of 17hh should be fed around 60ml per day.
If your horse is suffering with a specific inflammatory condition, such as a skin problem, arthritis or allergies, then you may wish to increase this amount, as the amount can depend on the severity of the condition and the individual.
If you are an endurance event rider or race horse owner and you wish to use the oil as an energy source, a daily feeding rate of between 130-200ml per day is suggested. Remember, the key is to feed the oil every day for results to be measurable.
Many horse owners, breeders and trainers are now starting to feed some form of oil as part of the diet. Whether it be for a shiny coat, or an energy source, there are several types of oil available. Flax Seed Oil will provide fantastic results in terms of soft, shiny coats and the energy provided, but the key advantage of using Flax Seed Oil over other readily available oils is the Omega 3 content.
Flax Seed Oil provides the richest (almost 60%) natural source of Omega 3, an essential fatty acid (EFA) which is not generally present in equine foods. Like all animals, horses cannot manufacture this essential fatty acid which is so important for their overall health.
Grain is a common ingredient of many modern horse feeds, and contains high levels of Omega 6, another Essential Fatty Acid. Many other oils such as Hemp and Soy Bean Oil are also much higher in Omega 6 than Omega 3. Every horse (and any other mammal) needs to obtain both Omega 3 and 6 in the diet, as they cannot be produced by the body, hence the term 'Essential'. However, very few horse feeds contain sufficient amounts of Omega 3, and it is this lack of Omega 3 and too much Omega 6 that is often cited as the cause for several inflammatory conditions such as laminitis, arthritis and skin problems.
Supplementing your horse's daily feed with Flax Seed Oil can help to rectify the imbalance of Omega 6 and 3, and help to avoid all sorts of inflammatory conditions, as well as supporting the immune, circulatory and digestive systems. On top of this, their coats will become soft and shiny, their skin will be healthy, their joints will be supported, muscles will repair quickly and their hooves will become strong and less prone to cracking! And as an energy source, Flax Seed Oil is second to none, with the equivalent amount of energy being provided in one cup of oil as four cups of grain. It is therefore ideal for race horses and endurance events, with the added advantage of muscles recovering quickly after exercise due to the high content of Omega 3.
Research also suggests that feeding a diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acids can help to improve semen quality and its tolerance to freezing and thawing. Below are some of the key benefits of adding Omega 3 rich Flax Seed Oil to your horse's diet:
- Dry, itchy skin conditions and hair loss issues can be improved naturally
- Can reduce the risk of allergies and allergic reactions such as Queensland itch
- The anti-inflammatory nature of Omega 3 can combat inflammation and inflammatory conditions such as laminitis
- Joint pain, reduced mobility, tying up and muscular cramps can be reduced, and recovery times following exercise are decreased, as the high Omega 3 content aids the breakdown of lactic acid
- Horses can become less 'fizzy' when the oil is used as an energy source, due to the oil being a fat source of energy rather than a carbohydrate source
- Hooves become stronger and less prone to cracking
- Coats become incredibly shiny and soft - perfect for showing your horses!
- Gastrointestinal disorders can be treated and digestion is helped
And finally, our Flax Seed Oils for horses are processed in exactly the same way as our Food Grade Oils, and meet food grade standards, so you can be assured you are feeding your horses a top quality grade oil.
Fourflax Equine Flax Seed Oil and Flax Seed Flake are both palatable and easy to administer. When kept refrigerated the oil will remain fresh and tasty for up to 3 months, and the flake should last for 12 months if stored correctly!

Feeding & Storage Guide
Fourflax Canine Flax Seed Oil and Flake are easy to feed and taste great! When kept refrigerated the oil will remain fresh and tasty for up to 3 months, and the Flake will remain fresh for 12 months from the day of opening if stored correctly!
We recommend that once you have bought Flax Seed Oil for your dog, you keep it in the fridge. This helps to maintain the quality and freshness of the oil. It is also a good idea to place some kitchen towel underneath to catch any drips! If the bottle is too big (such as the 5 Litre or 10 Litre), then as long as the bottle is kept in a cool dark place such as a garage or tack shed, the oil will keep just fine. The key is to keep the oil away from sunlight.
We suggest a daily feeding rate of 1ml of oil per 2kg of body weight as a starting point. This will help your dog to adjust to the oil. You should see visible results within 10-14 days, as long as the oil is fed every day. The coat should be healthier looking, and if your dog was suffering with a joint problem, you may well see a difference in mobility. If you are feeding the oil to a dog with a specific condition, such as a skin problem or allergies, then you may wish to increase the amount that you feed after 2 weeks if you have not seen an improvement, as the amount to feed can vary for individuals. But remember, the key is to feed the oil every day.
The 250ml, 500ml and 1 Litre bottles all come with pourers in the lid, which makes it really easy to just pour over the daily food, whether it be biscuits or raw meat etc.
With the Flax Seed Flake, again a cool dark place is important, so a pantry cupboard would be perfect. It is important to keep the flake out of sunlight as this will reduce the quality. We recommend feeding 1g of flake per 3/4kg of body weight, and a small plastic scoop is provided to help you measure in the larger containers! You may wish to feed more than this, but this depends entirely on what else is being fed.
Please note, if your dog has ever suffered from Pancreatitis or a Pancreatic condition then Flax Seed Oil should NOT be fed due to the fat content of the oil.
Fourflax Equine Flax Seed Oil and Flax Seed Flake are both palatable and easy to administer. When kept refrigerated the oil will remain fresh and tasty for up to 3 months, and the flake should last for 12 months if stored correctly!
